This year I formalized the list, and I wanted to share it with you!
These are races that have come up in trail groups and conversations year after year, plus a few others that I’ve found via searching for local beginner-friendly trail options. This list is focused on the greater NC area (basically anything within a few hours’ drive from central NC), mostly trails, with options from 5K up through 100 milers, plus the World Majors and a few tried and true popular road races.

It’s been a hot minute since I blogged consistently and shared some Fri-yay Fast Favorites, and there’s a lot of exciting news that I’ve been sharing on social media, but I never did share it in one coherent space! So here’s a super quick summary and round-up of some of the things going on in my life and some of my current favorites that I wanted to share with you.
How to determine what variable is your weakest link in training
The gear-changing workout is all about listening to your body - knowing when to push it and what you need to do to recover. It's knowing your limiting factor. Your limiting factor may be a variety of variables, but if you can identify that limiting factor you can train mindfully and effectively.
It can be tempting to run hard every time you go for a run, but really you shouldn't. Here's why.
10 miles can be an exhausting long run.I know this woman who has a son who, when he trains for a half marathon, goes all-out on every long run. He's young and full of energy and feels no fatigue throughout the training plan. For the rest of us though, we're not so lucky, and we have to train smart on the long run. While it can be tempting to run the weekly long run at race pace, it's actually smarter (especially for beginners) to take the long run at a nice, easy pace.
I did not want to run this weekend. I'd spent time and energy doing other things - cleaning up a state park and camping - and I just was not feeling the whole run 13 miles thing.
