American Tobacco Trail Offers Miles of Riding for Equestrians

Wake County section offers 4.7 miles of compacted gravel trail for horses and riders

The American Tobacco Trail, a 23-mile rails-to-trails project that runs through Wake, Durham, and Chatham counties, offers 4.7 miles of compacted gravel along the Wake County section where horses and riders can enjoy the wooded trail. On two afternoons recently I met up with equestrians to explore the trail and its features.

Friday Favorites - Park Photos

10 Wake County parks. Lots of fun photos!

It's Friday, Fri-yay! Who's got a long weekend ahead for July 4th? I'm taking off Monday to do some exploring, and yes I'll have my camera with me!

I've talked a bit about the Wake County parks project, but here's the run-down:

10 parks in Wake County. New websites and brochures. Lots of photos by yours truly. Yep, you've got the picture, and here are a few of my favorites so far!

Waiting

Some solitude and reflection on the American Tobacco Trail

It was the summer solstice and I was waiting for a group of cyclists to come down the American Tobacco Trail. I was hoping for a few photos of cyclists on the trail and had tentative plans to meet a group somewhere along the Wake County section, but with no firm confirmation and the sky darkening with clouds I found a scenic bridge and settled down to wait.

Sunday Stroll: American Tobacco Trail - New Hill-Olive Chapel Trailhead

I realized recently that as much as I talk about the American Tobacco Trail and as often as I go running on the trail that I've never actually written a blog post on it. Clearly I had to fix this. The American Tobacco Trail is the product of a rails-to-trails project converting 22+ miles of railroad track into a mixed use trail. The ATT now runs from Durham to Apex and includes miles of paved, mixed, and compact gravel surfaces. Since the trail is so long and has diverse surfaces and amenities at intermittent trailheads I am breaking this up into a series of posts focusing on a few miles at a time and highlighting special features, parking, and amenities, starting with the New Hill-Olive Chapel trailhead.

Travis + Kristen, Engagement Session, Durham, NC

I was so excited when a couple of my good friends announced their engagement! Seriously, these two are awesome - I know them from work and from running groups. These two rockstars helped me get through several races from my first half marathon at OBX to this year's Tar Heel 10 Miler. So when they asked me if I'd photograph their engagement session I was so stoked! They decided to set their engagement photos at the American Tobacco Trail, which is important to them as a place they frequently use for training runs. In one section of the trail there's a scenic bridge over Interstate 40 where Travis proposed to Kristen, so one evening we headed there to do a little celebration via photos. The highlights are in this post! Congrats, Travis and Kristen!
